About this sound

An eerie vocal cue from Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, used in anime edits to signal Return by Death, supernatural danger, or a dark reveal.

Call of the Witch is an ominous audio cue associated with Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. The short clip features a haunting, layered female vocalization with a dark musical swell, creating an immediate sense of supernatural danger. In the anime, this distinctive sound is closely connected to the Witch and Subaru’s Return by Death ability. Its sudden entrance can make an ordinary scene feel cursed, unsettling, or inevitable, which is why editors often use it before disturbing revelations, failed choices, time-loop jokes, and dramatic reversals.

The Call of the Witch cue comes from the Re:Zero anime adaptation, which premiered in 2016 and features music by composer Kenichiro Suehiro. Its haunting vocal motif became recognizable through scenes involving Subaru, the Witch’s influence, and his inability to explain Return by Death. Fans later carried the audio into anime compilations, reaction videos, remixes, and looping-failure memes. It remains useful because viewers familiar with Re:Zero can recognize its warning instantly, while the unsettling vocal still communicates dread without context.
