About this sound

The classic Rick Astley chorus clip from 1987, best known as the rickroll meme. People use it to bait links, fake reveals and playful trolling.

This sound is the instantly recognisable chorus from Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up, the part most people associate with a rickroll. It opens with bright 80s pop production and Rick Astley's deep vocal delivery, then lands with the familiar hook that gives away the joke in a second. Because so many people know it, the clip flips a normal moment into a punchline fast. It usually makes viewers laugh, groan, or instantly realize they have been baited on purpose.

Never Gonna Give You Up is a 1987 pop single by Rick Astley, written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. The song became tied to the rickroll in the mid-2000s, when internet users tricked people into opening the music video instead of the promised content. That bait-and-switch joke spread across forums, video sites, and social media, turning the chorus into one of the most durable meme sounds online. It is still used because the hook is widely recognized within seconds.
