About this sound

A short clip from Rick Astley's 1987 song Never Gonna Give You Up, famous as the rickroll soundtrack and used for bait-and-switch meme reveals.

This clip captures the instantly recognizable chorus of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. Bright synths, a steady dance-pop beat, and Astley’s deep lead vocal give the recording its upbeat, polished sound. Because the song is closely associated with rickrolling, even a few seconds can signal that a viewer has been fooled by a disguised link or unexpected reveal. The cheerful delivery adds playful contrast to failed predictions, fake announcements, abrupt transitions, and other edits built around harmless online misdirection.

Never Gonna Give You Up was released by English singer Rick Astley in 1987 and appeared on his debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody. The song later became the basis of rickrolling, an internet bait-and-switch prank in which a disguised link leads to its music video. The practice became widely recognized in 2007 and spread through forums, social platforms, and video edits. Its unmistakable opening and chorus remain useful because audiences can identify the joke within seconds.

Creators typically place it directly after a misleading setup, fake link, or anticipated reveal. A hard cut works best because viewers recognize the song quickly, while a long transition can weaken the sudden bait-and-switch effect.
