About this sound

The iconic “but first, let me take a selfie” line from The Chainsmokers song #SELFIE, used in memes, glow-up edits and party joke videos.

This clip features the instantly recognizable “but first, let me take a selfie” line, delivered in the playful spoken style heard in The Chainsmokers track #SELFIE. It has a flashy, slightly obnoxious party vibe that makes any moment feel more vain, chaotic or knowingly unserious. Creators use it to underline mirror checks, outfit reveals, group photos and over-the-top social media behavior. The sound lands best when a video suddenly shifts attention from the real event to someone stopping everything for a photo.

This sound is best known from The Chainsmokers single #SELFIE, released in 2014. The spoken line became the track's signature moment and quickly spread across short comedy edits, party videos and social media jokes about selfie culture. Even people who do not know the full song often recognize the quote on its own. It still gets used because it instantly signals vanity, playful self-importance and a very specific early social media era without needing much setup.

Why is this selfie sound so popular in memes?

It quickly communicates a joke about vanity, posing or stopping everything for a photo. Because the line is short, recognizable and exaggerated, creators can use it to punch up outfit reveals, vacation clips and ironic social posts.
