About this sound

The famous Howard Dean scream from his 2004 campaign speech, used in memes and edits to exaggerate awkward hype, overreaction, or failed momentum.

The Howard Dean Scream is the sharp, breathy yell from Howard Dean's 2004 post-caucus speech, best remembered for the final shouted “Yeah!” The clip sounds strained, overexcited, and slightly chaotic, which is exactly why it became such a lasting meme. In a short edit, it instantly turns a normal moment into something embarrassingly intense. People use it to underline cringey confidence, misplaced celebration, or a buildup that ends in a loud emotional burst instead of a cool payoff.

This sound comes from Howard Dean's 2004 U.S. presidential campaign, during a rally after the Iowa caucuses. Dean shouted a list of states and ended with the now-famous scream, which was widely replayed on television and online. The moment quickly became a political meme because the intense delivery sounded much more chaotic in short clips than it did in the full room context. It still gets used years later as shorthand for overexcited energy, public embarrassment, and momentum suddenly going off the rails.
