About this sound

A short clip of the opening lyric from Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence, used for ironic sadness, awkward pauses, failures, and meme edits.

This brief musical clip captures the instantly recognizable line “Hello darkness, my old friend” from The Sound of Silence. The subdued vocal delivery and somber melody create a feeling of loneliness, reflection, and quiet defeat. In online videos, that seriousness is often played for comedy, especially after an embarrassing mistake, disappointing result, or painfully awkward moment. Because the excerpt lasts only a few seconds, it works as a quick emotional punchline without interrupting the pace of an edit. Viewers immediately understand that something has gone wrong.

The lyric comes from The Sound of Silence, written by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon & Garfunkel. An acoustic version appeared on their 1964 album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., while a later electric remix became a major hit in 1965 and 1966. Decades later, the opening line became shorthand online for sadness and comic defeat, reinforced by its use in reaction edits and television comedy. The related Hello Darkness My Old Friend clip offers another version of the same recognizable meme moment.
