About this sound

The classic Wilhelm scream is a brief stock movie yell heard across films and games, used to punctuate falls, impacts, and comic on-screen deaths.

The Wilhelm scream is a short, highly recognizable human yell used as a stock sound effect in movies, television, and video games. This clip captures its sharp opening cry and rapidly fading finish, which make even a quick fall or impact feel dramatically exaggerated. Because audiences often recognize the scream, it can turn an otherwise serious action moment into an inside joke. Editors commonly use it for characters falling from heights, being thrown, crashing off screen, or meeting a comically over-the-top fate.

The Wilhelm scream originated as a stock recording used in the 1951 film Distant Drums. It later appeared when Private Wilhelm is shot in the 1953 Western The Charge at Feather River, inspiring its modern nickname. Sound designer Ben Burtt revived the effect in Star Wars and other productions, helping turn it into a recurring cinematic tradition. Its repeated appearances across films, television, and video games made it an audio Easter egg recognized by filmmakers and attentive audiences, and it remains popular for both homage and comedy.
