About this sound

The classic Game Over sound from Super Mario Bros., used in memes, fails and gaming edits when a moment ends badly or someone clearly loses.

This clip is the familiar Game Over jingle associated with Super Mario Bros., a short descending melody that instantly signals failure, defeat or the end of a run. Even though it is brief, it lands with a clear emotional punch: playful disappointment mixed with nostalgia. In videos and streams, creators use it to underline mistakes, sudden losses and anticlimactic endings. Because so many people recognize the Mario sound right away, it works as a fast visual-to-audio punchline that tells the audience exactly what just happened.

The Game Over cue comes from Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. era and became one of the most recognizable failure sounds in video game culture. It spread far beyond gameplay through compilations, YouTube edits, livestreams and short memes, where it became a shorthand for losing or messing up. Its staying power comes from how quickly listeners understand the joke: a few notes instantly communicate defeat. In meme editing, it often fills the same role as a buzzer, but with a more playful retro feel.
