About this sound

A short mashup of the EA Sports intro and Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up, used to bait viewers with a gaming-themed rickroll punchline.

This 6.8-second meme clip combines the familiar EA Sports audio identity with a sudden fragment of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The setup evokes the polished opening of a sports video game, then pivots into the instantly recognizable rickroll payoff. That quick collision between gaming nostalgia and an internet bait-and-switch makes the audio feel surprising without needing a long setup. Viewers recognize both references almost immediately, so it works especially well as a punchline after a fake game reveal, confident prediction, or seemingly serious sports edit.

The clip draws on two widely recognized pieces of pop culture: EA Sports audio branding and Rick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The song became the basis of rickrolling in 2007, when disguised links commonly redirected users to its music video. This short remix adapts that bait-and-switch format for gaming and sports edits. Its staying power comes from immediate recognition: the opening creates one expectation, while the song supplies a familiar internet punchline within seconds.
