About this sound

A short ba dum tss rimshot-style sound effect used after jokes, bad puns or awkward punchlines to highlight a cheesy comedic moment.

This clip is the classic ba dum tss style sting: a quick drum hit followed by a sharp cymbal crash that signals a punchline has landed, or failed spectacularly. It has a bright, snappy sound that instantly reads as comedy, especially when paired with a dad joke, obvious pun or intentionally awkward silence. Creators use it to underline humor without needing extra context, because the sound itself tells viewers to treat the moment like a joke. It works equally well for sincere punchlines and for ironic edits that mock how corny a line sounds.

The ba dum tss style rimshot comes from live comedy and variety performance, where drummers would accent a comedian’s punchline with a quick drum-and-cymbal hit. Online, the sound became a universal shorthand for corny jokes, deliberate cringe and self-aware humor. It still appears in memes, short videos and soundboards because viewers recognize the cue instantly, even when the exact recording varies from clip to clip. It often sits alongside other exaggerated reaction sounds like a vine boom sound or a SpongeBob Fail drop.
