About this sound

Baldi's ruler sound effect from Baldi's Basics features his sharp ruler slap. Creators use it for wrong-answer jokes, chase scenes, and tense edits.

Baldi’s ruler sound is the sharp, repetitive slapping noise associated with Baldi pursuing the player in Baldi’s Basics. Each strike has a dry, percussive crack that resembles a wooden ruler smacking against a hand or desk. The rhythm makes Baldi’s approach feel increasingly urgent, turning a simple classroom object into a warning of danger. In short videos and gaming edits, the sound adds immediate tension while retaining the game’s deliberately strange, comedic tone. It works especially well when a mistake suddenly leads to chaotic consequences.

The ruler sound comes from Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning, a 2018 indie horror game created by Micah McGonigal, also known as mystman12. Baldi uses the ruler while chasing the player after incorrect answers, with the audible strikes helping signal his movement and increasing threat. The game’s parody of low-budget educational software became widely recognized through gameplay videos and online memes. The ruler noise remains popular because it communicates Baldi’s presence instantly, even without showing the character or surrounding classroom.
