About this sound

A classic ba dum tss drum sting from comedy performance tradition, used after a corny punchline, awkward joke, or pun to underline the cheesy gag.

The bad joke drum sound is a brief comedic sting that imitates a drummer punctuating a punchline. Commonly written as “ba dum tss,” it typically combines two quick drum hits with a final cymbal accent. The exaggerated finish tells viewers that a joke, pun, or deliberately weak one-liner has just landed. Because the cue is instantly recognizable, it can make an ordinary remark feel knowingly corny or turn an awkward silence into part of the joke. Its compact rhythm also works well as a quick reaction in short videos and edited conversations.

The bad joke drum sting comes from a long comedy-performance convention in which a drummer accents a punchline with a short rhythmic flourish and cymbal hit. It is widely represented in text as “ba dum tss,” an imitation of the percussion pattern. Television comedy, live entertainment, and internet videos helped make the cue familiar beyond stage performances. It remains popular because listeners immediately understand its purpose: acknowledging a punchline while playfully suggesting that the joke is obvious, corny, or intentionally terrible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the bad joke drum sound called?

It is commonly called a rimshot, comedy drum sting, or “ba dum tss.” The short percussion pattern is used to punctuate a punchline, especially when the joke is corny, obvious, or intentionally weak.

Why is ba dum tss played after jokes?

The rhythm acts as an audible punctuation mark after a punchline. Its sharp cymbal finish signals where the audience should react, while modern creators often use it ironically to acknowledge a dad joke or deliberately awkward pun.

How should the bad joke drum sound be used?

Place it directly after the punchline or reveal, with a brief pause before the first drum hit. It works especially well with deadpan expressions, awkward silence, quick zooms, and captions highlighting an intentionally cheesy joke.
