About this sound

The classic AOL Instant Messenger notification sound, used in memes, edits and nostalgic clips when a new message pops up or an old-school chat joke lands.

This sound is the short incoming message alert from AOL Instant Messenger, better known as AIM. It is a crisp, electronic notification tone that instantly suggests a pop-up chat window and early internet messaging. Because the clip is under a second long, it works as a quick punchline or transition without overpowering the rest of a video. Viewers often react to it with instant nostalgia, especially if they remember desktop buddy lists, away messages and the sound of late-night conversations arriving on screen.

The AIM incoming message sound comes from AOL Instant Messenger, the hugely popular desktop chat program that defined online messaging for many users in the late 1990s and 2000s. As AIM became part of everyday internet culture, its alert tone turned into a shorthand for instant messages, buddy lists and away-message nostalgia. The clip still shows up in memes, retro edits and comedy videos because a single beep immediately tells viewers that a message just arrived, even if the scene is not literally about AIM.
