It is short, sharp and unmistakably 8-bit, with a quick descending melody that instantly signals failure. Because the sound is so familiar, it lands fast in memes, gaming edits and reaction videos. Even without any speech, viewers immediately read it as a classic game over moment, which makes small mistakes, bad decisions or sudden losses feel funnier and more dramatic.

This sound comes from Super Mario Bros, Nintendo’s 1985 platform game for the NES, where it plays when Mario loses a life. The cue became widely recognized through decades of re-releases, gameplay videos and retro game culture online.
