The short clang of Cairo Santos' kick hitting the upright for the Kansas City Chiefs, used for near misses, lucky bounces and football memes.

This is the split-second metallic ping of a football striking the goalpost upright, taken from Cairo Santos' game-winning attempt for the Kansas City Chiefs. The kick does not sail cleanly through, it clangs, wobbles and drops in, and that uncertainty is packed into less than a second of audio. The sharp doink rings out first, followed by the implication of a score that almost failed. Viewers instantly feel the tension release, because the sound alone tells the whole story of a kick that was inches from disaster but counted anyway in the end for the win.

The clip comes from a Kansas City Chiefs game in which kicker Cairo Santos, the Brazilian kicker who played for the team in the mid 2010s, saw his winning kick strike the upright before going through. Football fans call that metal-on-ball contact a doink, and the sound became a shorthand online for improbable luck. It spread through sports highlights, reaction edits and meme soundboards, where a single goalpost clang can replace a whole explanation. It stays popular because American football, soccer and basketball fans all recognise a post hit instantly.

What is the Chiefs Upright sound?

It is a very short clip of Cairo Santos' kick for the Kansas City Chiefs hitting the goalpost upright. You hear the sharp metallic doink of ball on post before the kick drops through for the winning score.

Who is Cairo Santos?

Cairo Santos is a Brazilian placekicker who played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2014 to 2017. He became known for accurate kicking and for several dramatic late kicks, including attempts that hit the upright yet still scored points.

Why do people use the doink sound in edits?

Creators use it to mark a lucky bounce or a shot that almost missed. The clang instantly signals a post hit in football, soccer or basketball clips, so it works as a punchline for near failures that somehow still succeed.
