Hello darkness, my old friend, the opening line from Simon and Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence, used for awkward and dramatic meme moments in videos.

This short clip delivers the soft, melancholic opening line of The Sound of Silence, sung in a low, gentle voice over a quiet acoustic guitar. It begins almost like a whisper, creating an immediate sense of loneliness and quiet reflection before the music has a chance to build. Because the line is so instantly recognisable, viewers understand the joke or the mood within a second, even without any other context. It turns an ordinary fail, an awkward silence or a sudden realisation into something dramatically sad and funny at the same time.

The line opens Simon and Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence, a folk song first released in the 1960s that later became one of the duo's most famous recordings. Its quiet, sombre tone made the opening phrase easy to lift out of context, and online creators began using it to soundtrack awkward, gloomy or ironically dramatic moments. The contrast between the serious singing and an everyday fail is what keeps it working, turning a small disappointment into a mock-tragic scene that viewers recognise instantly.
