Even in just a few seconds, the bright 80s pop beat and instantly recognizable vocal cue make the joke obvious right away. It works because viewers usually recognize it before the clip even fully lands, which creates a fast bait-and-switch payoff. The effect is playful, nostalgic, and a little smug, making it perfect for edits where you want the audience to realize they have been tricked almost immediately.

The rickroll comes from Rick Astley's 1987 hit Never Gonna Give You Up and became a major internet bait-and-switch meme in the mid-2000s. People were tricked into opening the song's video instead of the content they expected. Short edits like this became common on social platforms because the joke lands almost instantly without needing the full track. It is still widely used because the song is so recognizable and the prank is simple, harmless, and easy to remix alongside other meme staples like bruh.
