A cyberpunk remix of Plastic Love, the Mariya Takeuchi city pop classic, with pulsing synths and a neon night drive mood for fan edits and montages.

This clip takes the smooth chorus energy of Plastic Love and pushes it into a darker cyberpunk palette, with driving electronic drums, layered synths and a glossy late night sheen over the original city pop melody. The vocal hook stays bright and wistful while the production around it feels faster, colder and more cinematic. That contrast is what makes it land in edits, turning a simple drive, skyline or character montage into something nostalgic and futuristic at the same time, like a memory playing inside a neon lit future city.

Plastic Love was released in 1984 on Mariya Takeuchi's album Variety, written by Takeuchi and produced by her husband Tatsuro Yamashita. The city pop track stayed a Japanese hit before a 2017 YouTube upload sparked a global revival, inspiring vaporwave, future funk and anime edit communities. This cyberpunk version follows that remix tradition, reframing the wistful love song with darker electronic production suited to neon streets, rainy drives and futuristic montages shared online.

What song is Plastic Love Cyberpunk based on?

It is based on Plastic Love, the 1984 city pop song by Japanese singer Mariya Takeuchi. This version reworks that track with darker cyberpunk synths and electronic drums, keeping the wistful vocal hook and nostalgic melody at its centre.

Why did Plastic Love become popular online again?

A YouTube upload in 2017 introduced the 1984 track to listeners outside Japan, and its album artwork and smooth groove spread through recommendation algorithms. Vaporwave, future funk and city pop fans then remixed it heavily, leading to edits like this cyberpunk version.

How is the cyberpunk version used in videos?

Creators use it under night drives, rainy city footage, anime montages and retro futuristic fashion edits. The contrast between the sweet, nostalgic vocal and the colder electronic production gives ordinary footage a cinematic, neon lit mood without needing dialogue.
