The mimimi sound effect imitates a petulant whine, a vocal 'mi-mi-mi' gag creators drop to mock someone complaining in memes, prank clips and WhatsApp audios.

The mimimi clip is a short burst of vocal mockery: a voice rapidly repeats 'mi-mi-mi' in a high, nasal, singsong whine that imitates someone snivelling or crying like a spoiled child. It sounds like the verbal equivalent of rolling your eyes, a taunt that turns another person's complaint into a joke. Creators drop it over rants, excuses and overdramatic reactions to signal that the whining is not being taken seriously. Played at full volume it lands as cheeky teasing rather than real cruelty, which is why it works best between friends and in light-hearted edits.

The mimimi gag comes from internet slang rather than a film or show. In Italian online culture, 'mimimi' is the onomatopoeia for petulant whining, the equivalent of the English 'wah wah wah' trombone of complaint. The vocal version, someone chanting 'mi-mi-mi' in a mocking baby voice, spread as a user-generated soundboard clip and a WhatsApp voice-note reply, used to tease complainers without saying a word. Short, wordless and instantly recognisable, it survived as a reaction sound because it fits any argument, rant or excuse.

What is the mimimi sound?

The mimimi sound is a short vocal gag where a voice chants 'mi-mi-mi' in a high, mocking whine, imitating someone crying or complaining like a spoiled child. Creators play it to tease a complainer and turn their rant into a joke.

Where does the mimimi sound come from?

It comes from internet slang, not a movie or show. In Italian online culture 'mimimi' is the onomatopoeia for petulant whining, and the chanting vocal version spread as a user-generated soundboard clip and WhatsApp voice-note reply.

How do creators use the mimimi sound in videos?

Editors drop it right after a complaint, excuse or overdramatic rant, often with a zoom on the speaker's face, to mock the whining. It also works as a reply to whiny voice notes and as a punchline in meme compilations.
