A short, deep lion growl sound effect from the 1937 Mickey Mouse cartoon The Worm Turns, used for wild animal reveals and dramatic jungle moments.

This is a brief, low lion growl lasting less than half a second, with a throaty rumble and a sharp, snarling edge. It sounds like a big cat warning something off rather than a full roar, which makes it feel tense and immediate. The vintage cartoon recording gives it a slightly raw, theatrical quality instead of a modern nature documentary feel. Dropped into a video, it instantly signals danger, wildness, or an animal about to pounce, and viewers understand the joke or threat without needing to see the lion itself on screen at all.

The clip comes from the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Worm Turns, released on January 2, 1937, where cartoon sound effects were used to give animals exaggerated personalities. Short lion growls like this became reusable stock effects in animation and later in online editing, because a single snarl could stand in for any big cat. As soundboards and meme videos grew, creators kept using the vintage growl for pets, wildlife parodies, and mock-serious nature moments where a real roar would be too long or too intense for the joke.

What is the Lion Growls sound effect?

It is a very short lion growl lasting under half a second, with a low, throaty snarl. Creators use it as a quick animal cue for reveals, jokes, and tense moments without playing a full, drawn-out roar.

Where does this lion growl come from?

The recording is credited to the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Worm Turns from January 2, 1937. Like many cartoon effects from that era, it was designed as a compact, exaggerated animal sound that could be reused across scenes.

How do creators use the lion growl sound?

Most creators drop it on a single frame or cut, such as a pet appearing, a character getting angry, or a jungle scene starting. Because it ends so quickly, it works best as a punchline or warning rather than background ambience.
