The Family Fortunes 'uh-uh' wrong-answer buzzer from the British TV game show. A short, harsh two-note buzz that marks a failed guess — the sound of quiz fails.

This is the famous 'uh-uh' buzzer from Family Fortunes, the wrong-answer sound that plays when a contestant's guess misses the board. It is a short, harsh electronic buzz — two flat, descending notes delivered in under a second — with none of the warmth of a musical sting. The effect is instant public failure: one buzz tells the whole audience the answer was wrong before the host even speaks. Because the sound is so short and recognisable, viewers feel the sting of the mistake immediately, which makes it perfect for edits where someone confidently says the wrong thing.

Family Fortunes is the British version of Family Feud, first broadcast on ITV in 1980 with Bob Monkhouse as host, and the wrong-answer 'uh-uh' buzz became one of its most recognisable sounds. The cue spread far beyond the show through fail compilations, quiz clips and reaction memes, where a single buzz now means 'wrong' as instantly as Sad Trombone means a letdown. It is the mirror image of Victory Fanfare: one celebrates a win, the other buries a guess.

What is the Family Fortunes wrong answer sound?

It is the 'uh-uh' buzzer that plays on the British TV game show Family Fortunes when a contestant's answer is not on the board. The short two-note buzz signals an instant, comedic failure.

Where does the 'uh-uh' buzzer come from?

It comes from Family Fortunes, the British version of Family Feud that began on ITV in 1980. The same wrong-answer buzz is used in the American Family Feud, where it marks answers that miss the survey board.

How do creators use this sound in videos?

Creators drop it the moment a wrong answer, bad prediction or failed attempt is revealed, often with a red X or a freeze frame. One clean hit works best; repeating it drains the joke, so it is usually a single sting.
