Clip of the iconic kick ass declaration from They Live, used for bold entrances, fight scene intros and confident meme moments online today.

This is a short, gravel-voiced delivery of a macho one-liner announcing that the speaker has arrived purely to fight. The line lands flat and serious, with no music or build-up, which makes the bravado sound both threatening and a little absurd. That contrast is why it works as a punchline. Dropped over an ordinary entrance, a character walking into frame, or someone opening a door, it instantly upgrades the moment into a mock action-movie showdown, letting viewers feel the confidence before anything actually happens.

The line traces back to John Carpenter's 1988 film They Live, where Roddy Piper's character Nada delivers the longer bubblegum and kick ass threat before a bank fight. The shortened version was later echoed by Duke Nukem in the 1990s, cementing it as a staple tough-guy catchphrase in gaming culture. Clips of the delivery circulated on forums, video edits and soundboards in the 2000s, and it remains popular because the wording is instantly recognisable even without the full original quote.

Where is the 'I'm here to kick ass' line from?

The shortened line comes from Roddy Piper in They Live from 1988, where the full quote pairs chewing bubblegum with kicking ass before a fight. Duke Nukem later reused a similar version, helping the phrase spread widely in gaming culture.

Who says the kick ass quote?

In the original film the line is delivered by professional wrestler Roddy Piper playing drifter John Nada. His calm, matter of fact delivery before the action starts is a big part of why the quote feels both serious and funny to quote.

How do people use this sound online?

Creators place it at the start of entrances, boss fights and competitive gaming clips to signal confidence. It also works ironically over small or pet-sized challengers, where the tough delivery clashes with the harmless visual for comic effect.
