The iconic piano theme from The Exorcist, the chilling Tubular Bells melody used in horror edits, Halloween videos and spooky dark meme reveals.

This is the instantly recognisable opening of Tubular Bells, the progressive rock piece that became the main theme for The Exorcist. A repeating piano pattern in an odd time signature is layered with soft bells and a low, uneasy pulse, creating a melody that feels innocent and threatening at the same time. It does not jump out like a scream, it creeps in slowly and makes an ordinary scene feel possessed. Viewers hear just a few notes and immediately expect something demonic, haunted or deeply wrong to happen next on screen.

Tubular Bells was composed by Mike Oldfield and released in 1973, the same year director William Friedkin used its opening section in The Exorcist. The film became a landmark horror release, and the delicate piano motif became inseparably linked with demonic possession in popular culture. Decades later the clip circulates on soundboards and in short form video, where a few notes instantly turn a prank, costume reveal or haunted house clip into a reference everyone recognises without any explanation or dialogue needed at all.

What is the Exorcist theme song called?

The Exorcist theme is the opening section of Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. Its repeating piano and bell pattern was used in the 1973 film and has since become the sound most people associate with demonic possession and exorcism scenes.

Where does the Exorcist theme sound come from?

It comes from Mike Oldfield's 1973 debut album Tubular Bells. Director William Friedkin chose the track for The Exorcist after searching for music that sounded innocent yet unsettling, and the film's success fixed the melody in horror history.

Why do people use the Exorcist theme in memes?

People use it because a few notes instantly signal horror without needing visuals or dialogue. Placing the calm, eerie piano over normal footage creates a funny contrast, making everyday moments look possessed, cursed or about to turn supernaturally wrong.
