The classic scratched record sound effect of a vinyl needle dragging and stopping the music, used for awkward interruptions and sudden record scratch moments.

This is the harsh, screeching drag of a needle being pulled across a vinyl record, cutting the music off mid-phrase with a warped wobble and an abrupt stop. The pitch bends, the track stutters, and then everything freezes, which is exactly why it lands as a comedic interruption. It signals that something has gone wrong, someone has said the wrong thing, or the story is about to rewind for an explanation. At just over five seconds, the build and sudden halt give viewers an instant cue to pause and pay attention.

The record scratch became a storytelling shorthand in film and television long before memes, borrowing from the real sound of a stylus skidding across vinyl when playback is stopped by hand. DJs also turned deliberate scratching into a musical technique in hip hop in the 1970s, but the meme version is the accidental, disruptive one. Online editors adopted it for the freeze-frame flashback format, usually paired with a narrator rewinding to explain how a situation went wrong, and it remains a go-to interruption sound in short videos.

What is the scratched record sound?

It is the screech of a vinyl needle dragging across a record, warping the music and bringing it to a sudden stop. Creators use that hard cut as a signal that something awkward, surprising or wrong has just interrupted the scene.

Where does the record scratch meme come from?

It comes from the familiar film and television freeze-frame trope, where the music stops with a needle scratch and the narrator rewinds to explain the story. Online videos copied that exact timing, making the sound shorthand for a flashback or interruption.

How do you use this sound in a video edit?

Drop it exactly where the music or dialogue needs to stop, usually on a reaction face or a reveal. Let a brief silence follow the scratch, then cut to the flashback, caption or punchline so the interruption feels clear and deliberate.
