The classic dial-up internet modem noise, known for its beeps, static and screeching handshake tones. People use it in memes about slow tech and old internet days.

This clip is the familiar dial-up modem connection sound: a burst of clicks, electronic beeps, hiss and sharp screeching tones as the modem tries to connect to the internet. It has a jagged, mechanical rhythm that instantly signals old computers, slow loading pages and pre-broadband frustration. Even in a very short clip, the sound feels tense and nostalgic at the same time. Viewers usually recognize it right away, so it works as a quick joke for outdated technology, terrible Wi-Fi comparisons or anything that needs a very retro internet setup.

The dial-up modem sound comes from the connection handshake used by telephone-based internet access, especially common in homes during the 1990s and early 2000s. Those tones were the modem exchanging data and negotiating a connection over a phone line. Long after dial-up faded, the noise stayed recognizable online because it instantly communicates old-school internet, waiting, and technical frustration. It still appears in memes, retro edits, and comedy clips whenever creators want to suggest ancient computers or a comically slow connection.

What is the dial-up modem sound?

It is the series of tones, static and screeching noises a dial-up internet modem made while connecting through a telephone line. Most people know it as the classic old internet connection sound from home computers.

Why did dial-up make that noise?

The modem was converting digital data into audio tones that could travel over a phone line, then negotiating the connection with another modem. The strange beeps and screeches were part of that handshake and data setup process.

Why is this sound still popular in memes?

It is instantly recognizable and carries a strong retro association with slow internet, old PCs and early web culture. Creators use it as shorthand for outdated technology, long waits, or a nostalgic throwback joke.
