The ba dum tss drum rimshot and cymbal crash played after a bad joke or punchline, used in comedy videos, memes and reaction clips.

This is the short, punchy drum sting every comedy audience recognizes instantly: a snare hit, a quick tom roll and a bright cymbal crash that lands like a musical full stop. It lasts just over two seconds, so it cuts through dialogue without stealing the scene, but still tells listeners that a joke has just landed, even a deliberately terrible one. The effect is pure timing, turning an awkward pause into a laugh by signaling that the punchline was meant to be corny, and it works just as well when the joke falls flat on purpose.

The ba dum tss is a long-standing comedy drummer's accent, a quick rimshot and cymbal crash used to punctuate a punchline in live performance. As short-form video and meme editing grew, the same two-second sting moved from the stage to reaction clips, gaming streams and Spanish-language joke compilations, where its Spanish title, bateria chiste, simply means joke drums. It survives because the timing is instantly understood without words, so it works across languages and formats whenever a creator wants a joke to land, or deliberately fall flat.

What is the ba dum tss sound?

It is a short comedy drum sting made of a snare or rimshot hit followed by a cymbal crash. Drummers traditionally play it straight after a punchline to signal that a joke has just been told, especially a corny one.

Why do creators use it after a bad joke?

It turns an awkward moment into the joke itself. The familiar crash tells viewers the punchline was meant to be cheesy, so even a joke that falls flat gets a laugh from the timing rather than the wording.

How long is this clip and how can I use it?

The clip runs for just over two seconds, making it easy to drop into the pause after a punchline in a video, stream or meme. Let the cymbal finish before the next line so the joke has room to land.
