The classic descending wau wau wau trombone fail sound effect used for awkward moments, bad jokes, disappointments and comedic letdowns in videos.

This is the descending sad trombone effect, played as three short wau notes followed by a long, drooping wuaaaauuuu that slides down in pitch. The muted brass tone sounds deflated and slightly whiny, instantly signalling that something has gone wrong. It lands like a punchline in reverse, turning a mistake, rejection or failed attempt into a joke. Because the timing builds expectation with the first three notes before the final slide collapses, viewers feel the letdown before anyone explains it, making the moment read as comic disappointment rather than real sadness.

The wau wau sound comes from a trombone played with a wah-wah mute, a technique long used in vaudeville, radio comedy and cartoons to mock a failure. Its three short blasts and falling finale became a universal shorthand for womp womp disappointment online. Editors reuse it in memes, game fails, prank clips and reaction videos because audiences recognise the meaning without words. It survives because it is purely musical, works in any language, and can soften an embarrassing moment into shared, light-hearted comedy.

What is the wau wau wau sound?

It is a sad trombone effect made with a muted trombone playing three short descending notes and one long sliding note. The falling pitch imitates a deflated sigh, which is why it instantly reads as comic failure or disappointment.

Where does the sad trombone sound come from?

It comes from trombone playing with a wah-wah mute, a comic technique used for decades in vaudeville, radio, cartoons and television. Online editors later adopted the same short phrase as a meme sound for fails, bad news and awkward punchlines.

How do I use the wau wau sound in a video?

Place the sound just after the moment goes wrong, starting the three short notes on the reveal and letting the final slide finish over the reaction. Keep it clear in the mix and avoid layering other effects over the ending.
