The whispered ki ki ma ma sound from Friday the 13th that signals Jason Voorhees is near. Horror creators use it for jump scares, pranks and tense edits.

This short clip repeats the hushed, breathy ki ki ma ma whisper made famous by Friday the 13th, a sound that feels less like speech and more like a warning rustling just behind the listener. It is quiet, rhythmic and slightly distorted, with each syllable landing like a footstep in the dark, so even before anything appears on screen the audience starts to feel watched. That creeping dread is why it works so well in short videos: it primes viewers for danger, makes an ordinary doorway or empty hallway feel threatening, and turns a simple reveal into a genuine jolt.

The ki ki ma ma motif comes from the original Friday the 13th film from 1980, where composer Harry Manfredini shaped the whispered syllables from the words kill and mom to suggest Jason Voorhees and his mother. It returned across the long-running slasher franchise and became a shorthand for an unseen killer approaching, long before short-form video existed. Today horror editors, gamers and prank creators reuse it because listeners recognise the pattern instantly, even without seeing the film, and a few seconds of that whisper can set up a jump scare.

Where does the ki ki ma ma sound come from?

Creators usually place it just before a reveal or jump scare, letting the quiet whisper build tension while the camera moves toward a dark doorway or empty room. It works best at low volume, so the sudden scare that follows feels sharper.
