The NBC Studios 1999 theme, a short orchestral ident with the famous three-note chimes, used for retro TV intros, logo parodies and broadcast-style transitions.

This twelve-second clip is the 1999 NBC Studios ident, built around a bright orchestral swell that resolves into the network's famous three-note chimes. Brass and strings carry the melody with a polished, late-night-television sheen, and the mix stays clean and spacious so the final chime lands with weight. It feels instantly authoritative and nostalgic at once, the way old broadcast logos do, triggering recognition before a single word is spoken. Creators reach for it when they want a moment to feel like a real television event rather than just another edit.

The NBC chimes, the three-note G-E-C motif at the heart of this ident, date back to the network's radio era in the late 1920s and became one of the first audio trademarks in broadcasting. By the late 1990s NBC was refreshing its on-air branding with polished orchestral idents like this 1999 Studios version, played over production logos and show openings. The theme spread beyond television as meme editors repurposed network idents for parody broadcasts, and it still works today because, like the Law and Order DUN DUN sting, it instantly signals 'real television' to any viewer.

What is the NBC Studios 1999 theme sound?

It is a short orchestral network ident built around NBC's famous three-note chimes. The 1999 Studios version pairs a bright brass-and-strings swell with the classic G-E-C chime motif used across NBC's on-air branding.

Where do the NBC chimes come from?

The three-note G-E-C chimes date back to NBC's radio broadcasts in the late 1920s and became one of the first registered audio trademarks. They have opened and closed NBC programming in various arrangements ever since.

How do creators use this sound in edits?

Editors use it as a fake broadcast intro, a transition sting, or a punchline after a mock-serious announcement. It works best over logo-style graphics or channel idents with the final chime left in silence.
