Cri is a short dramatic crying sound effect used for sad, awkward or painfully funny moments in memes, video edits, streams and group chats as a reaction.

Cri is an exaggerated crying sound that stretches a simple sad reaction into a full dramatic moment. The clip is built around sobbing and sniffling with a wavering, tearful tone that rises and falls rather than staying flat. It sounds intentionally over the top, which is why it lands as comedy more often than genuine sadness. Placed after a fail, rejection or minor disaster, it gives the viewer an instant emotional cue and lets the joke breathe. The length makes it feel like the crying keeps going long after the moment should have ended, adding to the awkward humour.

Cri comes from internet slang for cry, shortened into a quick label that is easy to search, share and reuse as a reaction. The clip spread through soundboards and short video edits where creators needed a clear audio cue for disappointment without explaining the joke. Because the sobbing is exaggerated, viewers recognise the tone instantly even without any picture. It stays popular for fails, awkward pauses and mock dramatic moments, and its longer running time lets editors stretch a sad reaction for comic timing or cut it down to a single sniffle.

What is the Cri sound?

Cri is a short exaggerated crying sound effect built around sobbing and sniffles. Creators use it as a reaction for sad, awkward or painfully funny moments, usually after a fail, rejection or disappointing result in a meme or video edit.

Where is the Cri sound from?

The exact original recording is not clearly documented, so Cri is best known through its use on soundboards and in short online edits. The name comes from internet slang for cry, which is how most people search for and share it.

How do you use the Cri sound in a video?

Place the first sob directly on the moment something goes wrong, then let the sniffles continue briefly under the reaction shot. Keep the volume clear over background audio, and trim the ending early if the joke needs a faster cut.
