The short jingle with the repeating ao-ao chant heard during Australian Open tennis broadcasts, often used online as an annoying earworm meme sound.

It is a bouncy few-second jingle built around a repeated 'ao-ao' vocal hook, the earworm that plays around Australian Open tennis coverage. The chant is simple and chantable, looping over bright, bouncy music that sticks in the head after a single hearing. Because it is tied to hours of tennis on television every January, viewers associate it with late nights, long rallies and endless highlight reels. Lifted out of context, it becomes a tongue-in-cheek irritation bomb, perfect for punishing friends who keep quoting it or for scoring any moment that feels repetitive and inescapable.

The 'ao-ao' jingle is best known as the short ident attached to Australian Open coverage, played between segments and highlights. Tennis fans hear it dozens of times during the tournament fortnight, which is exactly why it became a meme: the hook is simple enough to quote and annoying enough to weaponise. Clips of the chant now circulate on soundboards as an irritation button, often dropped alongside sports crowd noise like crowd cheering when someone wants to celebrate or taunt. Nobody is quite sure who composed the original ident, so it survives as a piece of tennis folklore.

What is the AO theme sound?

It is the short 'ao-ao' chant jingle associated with Australian Open tennis coverage, a bouncy ident sting that plays between broadcast segments. Soundboard users lift it out of context as an annoying earworm meme.

Where does the ao-ao chant come from?

The chant is tied to the Australian Open tennis tournament's broadcast identity, where the short jingle plays repeatedly around match coverage. Its exact composer is not documented, so it is best described as tennis broadcast folklore rather than a single artist's song.

Why do people use the AO theme in memes?

Because the chant is catchy, repetitive and slightly irritating after hours of tennis coverage, it works as a tongue-in-cheek punishment sound. Creators drop it to mock repetition, tease tennis fans, or turn any tedious moment into a joke.
