About this sound

Kazuhira Miller asks why we are still here in Metal Gear Solid V, a dramatic meme sound used for painful setbacks, failures and existential jokes.

This voice clip features Kazuhira Miller delivering the anguished line about being here only to suffer. His strained, reflective performance gives the audio an intensely dramatic tone, turning an ordinary question into a bleak summary of frustration and loss. Online, that seriousness is often played against minor inconveniences, failed attempts, awkward situations or endlessly repeated tasks. The contrast makes the moment feel both genuinely emotional and darkly funny, especially when it follows footage of someone realizing that their effort has been wasted.

The line comes from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, released in 2015, and is spoken by Kazuhira Miller during the game’s opening. Its solemn delivery and focus on suffering made it easy to detach from the original scene and reuse as a reaction meme. Clips, edits and remixes spread across video platforms, gaming communities and social media. The broader Metal Gear connection remains recognizable, while the quote still works for audiences who simply associate it with exaggerated despair.
