About this sound

The classic sad trombone became a meme sound for failure moments and ironic disappointment jokes. Used widely in TikTok edits and internet culture humor content.

This clip is the familiar wah wah wah waaaah sting, usually played like a muted trombone sliding downward after something goes wrong. It has a droopy, exaggerated shape that instantly signals failure, disappointment or an awkward flop. Because the notes descend and stretch at the end, it lands like a comedic deflation instead of a dramatic crash. In videos, it turns missed shots, bad jokes and embarrassing reveals into a clear punchline that viewers recognize within a second.

This sound is best known online as the sad trombone, a short descending comic sting used to mark failure or disappointment. The effect existed long before internet memes in comedy, stage and broadcast traditions, then spread widely through YouTube edits, reaction clips and short-form videos. Its meaning is so immediate that creators still use it as shorthand for a flop, often alongside gloomy reaction audio like Hello darkness my old friend when they want the joke to linger.
