About this sound

A sharp, Psycho-style violin screech inspired by classic horror scoring, used to punctuate jump scares, shocking reveals, and sudden comic panic.

This four-second sound is a piercing violin screech shaped like a classic horror sting. Its high, abrasive string tone arrives quickly and sustains enough tension to make an image feel dangerous, startling, or deliberately overdramatic. The sound strongly evokes the musical language associated with slasher scenes and sudden attacks, especially rapid, dissonant strings. Editors often use it to turn an ordinary reveal into a jump scare or to exaggerate a character’s alarm. In comedic videos, the intensity creates contrast when the supposed threat is harmless or absurd.

The title references the shrieking string sound famously associated with Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho. Composer Bernard Herrmann scored the shower sequence with forceful, dissonant string gestures that became a lasting shorthand for terror and sudden violence. This clip’s exact recording source is not confirmed, so it is best understood as a Psycho-style horror sting rather than an authenticated excerpt from the film. Similar violin screeches later spread through parody, television, online videos, and reaction edits because audiences recognize the effect immediately.
