About this sound

A creepy VHS-style horror noise with analog static and eerie tape distortion, used in scary edits, liminal clips and retro found footage memes.

This sound is a long, unsettling VHS horror effect built from analog-style static, tape hiss, warped noise and dark droning texture. It feels like an old videotape glitching out during a scary scene, with the kind of rough, degraded audio people associate with found footage and retro horror. The effect instantly makes a clip feel tense, uncanny and slightly haunted. Creators use it to turn ordinary visuals into something ominous, especially in horror edits, creepy memes, fake cursed recordings and videos that need a sudden shift into dread.

This sound is best understood as a VHS-style horror effect rather than a quote from one specific movie or meme. It draws on the audio language of analog videotapes, tape damage, static and retro horror editing that became especially common in online scary videos, found footage parodies and liminal compilations. Creators keep using this style because it signals danger immediately, even without dialogue. It often appears alongside glitch visuals, dark filters and sudden stingers similar in role to a scream meme or a buzzer in abrupt comedic edits.
