About this sound

The classic PSX startup sound from the original Sony PlayStation boot sequence, used in retro gaming edits, nostalgic reveals, and console memes.

This clip captures the distinctive startup audio associated with the original Sony PlayStation, commonly called the PS1 or PSX. It begins with a deep, resonant swell before shifting into bright, glassy tones that signal the console is ready to load a game. The layered sound feels futuristic, mysterious, and warmly nostalgic, especially for players who remember booting games from discs. In videos, it instantly creates a retro gaming atmosphere and can make an ordinary reveal feel like the opening of a classic 1990s game session.

The startup sequence originated with Sony's original PlayStation, released in Japan in 1994 and widely known as the PS1 or PSX. Its boot audio accompanied the console logo before a disc-based game loaded, making it familiar to a generation of players. Online, the sound later spread through retro gaming videos, console comparisons, remixes, and nostalgia memes. It remains recognizable because its slow swell and crystalline finish are closely tied to the ritual of starting a PlayStation. A related Ps1 clip offers another take on this familiar console audio.
