About this sound

A bass-boosted, heavily distorted version of the THX Deep Note, used in memes, loud reveals, jump scares, and deliberately over-the-top video edits.

This sound takes the familiar THX Deep Note and pushes it into earrape territory with extreme volume, clipping, and overwhelming bass. The rising synthesized tones build tension before merging into a dense, distorted blast that lasts for several seconds. Because the audio is intentionally harsh, it turns cinematic anticipation into an absurd punchline. Viewers may recognize the underlying theater-style audio logo immediately, while the exaggerated distortion makes the moment feel chaotic, startling, and comically excessive. It works especially well when a scene suddenly becomes dramatic for no good reason.

The original THX Deep Note was created by audio engineer James A. Moorer and introduced in 1983 as part of the THX cinema presentation. Its layered synthesized tones gradually converge, producing the powerful swell associated with theatrical sound demonstrations. Internet creators later transformed recognizable versions of the cue through bass boosting, clipping, and extreme volume, creating the earrape meme format represented here. These edits remain popular because the gradual buildup gives viewers time to anticipate a payoff before the distorted climax overwhelms the scene.
