About this sound

A loud elephant-rat trumpet from The Croods, used in movie memes, creature reveals, chaotic edits, and clips needing a sudden comic animal call.

This clip captures the distinctive trumpet-like cry associated with the elephant rats in The Croods. The call is loud, nasal, and exaggerated, resembling a small creature unexpectedly producing the blast of a full-sized elephant. Its unusual scale and abrupt delivery give the moment a playful, chaotic quality. In edits, the sound quickly draws attention to an animal, character, or object entering the frame. The roughly eleven-second duration also leaves room for a reveal, reaction, or visual punchline to unfold alongside the call.

The sound comes from The Croods, the 2013 animated prehistoric comedy featuring a world of imaginative hybrid animals. The elephant rats fit the film’s playful approach to combining familiar creatures into surprising designs and noises. Short excerpts of their trumpet-like call later became useful for reaction edits and animal memes, where the mismatch between a small subject and a powerful sound creates the joke. It remains recognizable because its exaggerated call works without dialogue and can accompany many kinds of visual reveals.
