About this sound

The Super Mario 64 Thwomp sound is a brief, heavy game effect tied to the stone enemy, used in gameplay edits, memes, and sudden-impact moments.

This short Super Mario 64 effect captures the blunt, weighty presence of a Thwomp, the stone obstacle that drops to crush Mario. The clip lands quickly, with a harsh, compressed game-audio character that makes the action feel sudden and forceful. Its compact length works like an audio punctuation mark: viewers immediately read it as danger, impact, or a failed attempt. Because the effect is closely associated with a recognizable enemy encounter, it also brings Nintendo 64 nostalgia to game clips, reaction edits, and visual punchlines.

Released by Nintendo in 1996, Super Mario 64 brought Mario into a fully 3D platforming adventure. Thwomps appear as massive stone obstacles that wait before slamming down, and this brief effect is associated with that encounter. The audio later became useful beyond ordinary gameplay footage, especially in retro gaming edits, challenge videos, and memes built around abrupt failure or impact. It remains recognizable because it combines a familiar enemy cue with the distinctive compressed sound of the Nintendo 64 era.
