About this sound

The legendary rimshot drum sting has been used for decades to punctuate jokes, now a core meme sound for awkward pauses, ironic fails, and sarcastic punchlines across reaction edits, gaming humor, and modern internet comedy culture.

The rimshot is a short, sharp comedy sting, usually heard as a snare hit with a cymbal accent or a tight ba-dum-tss pattern. It lands right after a joke, bad pun or uncomfortable silence to underline the moment and make the timing feel deliberate. Because it is so brief and recognisable, it can turn a flat line into an obvious punchline or make a painfully unfunny moment feel even funnier. In edits, it works as both a laugh cue and a way to heighten awkwardness.

The rimshot comes from live comedy and variety performance, where drummers would accent punchlines with a quick sting on the kit. It became a standard audio cue in radio, television and stand-up, then carried into internet editing as a simple way to mark jokes and anti-jokes. Online, creators often use it for dry humor, cringe punchlines and deliberate bad timing. It remains popular because the meaning is instantly clear even in very short clips.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rimshot sound?

A rimshot is a short drum accent used to punctuate a joke or comedic moment. In meme edits, it usually appears right after a punchline, bad pun or awkward pause to make the joke feel more obvious.

Where does the rimshot come from?

The rimshot is an older comedy and performance cue associated with live drummers accenting punchlines. It later became common in radio, television, stand-up and digital editing because audiences instantly recognize its comic timing.

When should I use the rimshot in a video?

Use it right after the line or visual beat you want to frame as the joke. It works especially well for deadpan humor, corny one-liners, fail moments and edits where the silence afterward is part of the punchline.
