Creators use it to sell a sudden scare, underline a spooky reveal, or give gameplay edits that unmistakable haunted-house feeling without needing a full scream or loud impact.

This sound comes from Phasmophobia, the online co-op ghost hunting game released in 2020 by Kinetic Games. As the game grew on Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok, its creepy vocal effects and ghost noises became recognizable outside normal gameplay.
