About this sound

A short “Nani?!” reaction clip inspired by anime dialogue, used in edits and memes when something sudden, confusing or unbelievable happens.

This sound is a very short burst of the classic anime-style “Nani?!” exclamation, the Japanese word for “what?” delivered with surprise and disbelief. It hits fast, with a sharp, dramatic tone that instantly tells the viewer something unexpected just happened. Because the clip is so brief, creators use it like a punchline or reaction tag rather than a full quote. It works especially well in meme edits, anime jokes, gaming moments and reveal clips where the whole point is a split second of confusion, shock or exaggerated surprise.

“Nani?!” became widely recognizable online through anime fandom, where Japanese reaction lines were clipped, remixed and shared in short meme edits. The word simply means “what?”, but its dramatic delivery made it ideal for reaction humor on YouTube, TikTok and Discord. Even when the exact source clip is unclear, the sound survives because viewers instantly understand the emotion: confusion, disbelief and a slightly shocking turn. It often appears alongside other exaggerated reaction sounds in fast-cut meme videos.
