About this sound

A classic canned audience laughter clip used in sitcom-style edits, reaction videos and memes to make a joke land or highlight an awkward fail.

This sound is a short laugh track: a burst of recorded audience laughter that instantly gives a clip the feel of an old sitcom or comedy sketch. It usually sounds bright, crowded and exaggerated, with multiple people laughing at once instead of one real person reacting. That makes it useful for irony, because it can turn a weak joke into a deliberately overpraised moment or make a cringey scene feel even more uncomfortable. In edits, it works as a punchline button that tells the viewer exactly how to read the moment.

The laugh track comes from the long TV practice of using prerecorded audience laughter in comedy shows, especially sitcoms. Variations of these canned laughs have circulated for decades in editing packs, soundboards and meme videos, so many uploads do not have one single traceable source clip. Online, creators use a laugh track because everyone recognizes the joke language immediately: it signals punchline, irony or embarrassment in under a second. That simple, familiar cue keeps it popular across short-form videos, streams and reaction edits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a laugh track sound?

A laugh track is prerecorded audience laughter added to a scene after a joke, awkward pause or fail. In meme edits, it gives clips a sitcom feel and tells viewers to read the moment as funny or intentionally cringey.

Where does this laugh track style come from?

This style comes from television comedy, especially sitcoms that used canned laughter or sweetened audience reactions. The exact source of a specific short online clip is often unclear, because many versions have been copied, trimmed and reposted for years.

How do creators usually use a laugh track?

Creators usually place it right after a punchline, failed attempt or awkward expression. It works best when there is a short pause before the laughter, so the joke lands first and the track acts like the reaction button.
