About this sound

A sinister laugh associated with Fantômas from the classic French crime-comedy films, used to punctuate villain reveals, schemes, and dark jokes.

This short clip captures the cold, theatrical laughter associated with Fantômas, the masked criminal mastermind of French cinema. The laugh begins with a controlled, taunting rhythm and develops into an unsettling burst of amusement, giving it a distinctly villainous character. Its dramatic tone can make an ordinary reveal feel like part of an elaborate criminal scheme. Because the recording lasts only a few seconds, it works as a sharp reaction cue for moments involving deception, secret plans, suspicious behavior, or someone taking exaggerated pleasure in causing trouble.

Fantômas is a fictional French criminal created in the early twentieth century and later adapted across books, serials, and films. This laugh is associated with the character’s screen image as a calculating master of disguise. The best-known comedy-adventure film trilogy began with Fantômas in 1964, directed by André Hunebelle and starring Jean Marais in the title role. Short extracts highlighting the villain’s eerie manner have continued circulating online, where the laughter remains useful as a compact cue for scheming, deception, and theatrical menace.
