About this sound

Chewbacca's iconic roar from Star Wars, a guttural Wookiee growl used in memes, reaction edits, gaming clips, and videos showing anger or frustration.

This short clip captures Chewbacca’s unmistakable roar, the rough, throaty vocalization associated with the Wookiee hero from Star Wars. It begins as a deep growl before rising into a strained howl, giving it a blend of anger, alarm, and comic exasperation. Because the noise is expressive without using words, viewers immediately understand the emotional punch. Creators often use it to exaggerate a frustrated reaction, turn an ordinary outburst into a movie reference, or make someone appear to transform into an enraged Wookiee.

Chewbacca debuted in the original Star Wars film in 1977 as Han Solo’s Wookiee companion. Sound designer Ben Burtt developed the character’s voice from edited recordings of animals rather than spoken dialogue, creating a recognizable range of growls, moans, and roars. The sound remained closely associated with Chewbacca throughout later films and wider popular culture. Online, short roar clips became useful reaction audio because they communicate anger, distress, or exaggerated disbelief instantly while also delivering a familiar Star Wars reference.
