About this sound

Canto Urutau is an eerie South American bird call, often linked to the urutau or potoo, used in nature clips, spooky edits and reaction videos.

Canto Urutau is a haunting bird vocalization associated with the urutau, a nocturnal bird also commonly known as a potoo in South America. The call has a mournful, wavering quality that can sound surprisingly human from a distance. Its unusual tone creates an immediate feeling of mystery, loneliness or unease, especially when heard without visual context. The recording works as a natural sound effect for creators who want to make a quiet scene feel supernatural, highlight nighttime wildlife, or give a reaction moment an unexpectedly eerie atmosphere.

Urutau is a common name used for nocturnal potoo birds found in South America, and their distinctive calls are often heard after dark. The sound has circulated online as a recognizable nature recording rather than being tied to one particular film, character or meme. Its unusual, mournful quality makes it useful in short videos, spooky edits, wildlife posts and reaction content. Listeners may encounter different recordings because several urutau or potoo species produce related vocalizations, so the exact bird and location cannot always be identified from the audio alone.
