A steady 2600 Hz telephone tone associated with 1960s and 1970s phone phreaking, used in videos about retro technology and hacking history.

This clip is a sustained electronic tone at 2600 hertz, lasting just under five seconds. Its clean, high-pitched whistle is closely associated with early telephone phreaking and the manipulation of analog long-distance systems. The sound feels clinical and distinctly retro, making it effective for scenes involving vintage communications, technical experiments, or historical hacking references. Because the frequency is constant and piercing, it quickly commands attention and can create tension, curiosity, or an unsettling sense that a machine or communications network is being accessed.

The 2600 Hz tone became associated with phone phreaking during the 1960s and 1970s, when parts of the American long-distance network used audible, in-band signals to manage telephone trunks. Phreakers discovered that carefully generated tones could interact with this signaling system and help manipulate call routing, sometimes enabling calls without normal charges. As telephone networks moved toward more secure out-of-band signaling, the technique became obsolete. The frequency remains recognizable through documentaries, technology history, hacker culture, and recreations of early telecommunications experiments.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What is the 2600 Hz tone?

It is a steady audio frequency at 2600 hertz. The tone is historically associated with analog telephone trunk signaling and the phone phreaking techniques used to explore or manipulate older long-distance networks.

Why was 2600 Hz used in phone phreaking?

Some older American telephone systems carried control signals within the same audible channel as calls. A 2600 Hz tone could affect trunk signaling, allowing knowledgeable users to interfere with call handling and routing.

How can creators use the 2600 Hz tone?

Creators commonly place it over vintage telephone footage, technical demonstrations, hacker-history scenes, or transitions involving old communications equipment. Its sharp, continuous pitch works best in short bursts and at a controlled volume.
