The black ball loss sound from the French TV game show Motus, used in memes and edits to mark a bad guess, fail, or sudden setback.

Motus Boule Noire is the short sting associated with drawing the dreaded black ball in the French television game show Motus. It has an unmistakable game-show feel: tense for a moment, then bluntly disappointing, which makes the clip funny even if you have never watched the program. In edits, it works like an instant failure cue, turning a wrong answer, unlucky reveal, or awkward moment into a clean comedic beat. The sound lands fast, so viewers immediately read it as a loss, punishment, or unfortunate twist.

This sound comes from Motus, a long-running French television game show adapted from the American format Lingo. The “boule noire” moment became especially memorable because it instantly signaled a harsh loss of progress or a turn-ending setback. Online, the clip spread beyond French TV audiences because the meaning is obvious even without context: one sound, and the joke is that everything just went wrong. It still shows up in fail edits, quiz memes, and reaction compilations as a recognizable French game-show sting.
