The classic “He's dead, Jim” line from Star Trek, spoken by Dr. McCoy when a character has died and used as a meme reaction to dramatic failures.

He's Dead, Jim is a spoken reaction associated with Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy from Star Trek. The clip delivers the doctor's blunt confirmation that someone has died, addressing Captain Kirk by his first name. Its measured, matter-of-fact delivery adds dry humor when placed over an obviously broken object, failed plan, defeated character, or doomed situation. Because the line sounds serious and final, it can turn an ordinary mishap into a mock tragedy while remaining instantly recognizable to science-fiction fans and meme audiences.

The phrase grew from Dr. Leonard McCoy's death pronouncements in the original Star Trek television series, which began airing in 1966. Played by DeForest Kelley, McCoy often addressed Captain Kirk as Jim while confirming that someone, or something, was dead. Repeated variations turned the wording into one of the character's best-known catchphrases. Later references, parodies, and internet reaction posts detached it from specific episodes, preserving it as concise shorthand for anything broken, finished, or beyond recovery.
