Gargamel's evil laugh from The Smurfs, used for villain reveals, scheming moments and funny fails in memes, edits, short videos and reaction clips.

This is Gargamel's unmistakable villain laugh, a wheezing, gleeful cackle from the scheming wizard who is always hunting the Smurfs. It starts low and menacing, then breaks into a delighted, almost manic chuckle that instantly tells the listener a plan is forming or has just gone deliciously wrong. The tone is cartoonish rather than frightening, which is why it lands so well as a reaction: it sounds like someone enjoying their own mischief a little too much. Played on its own, it turns an ordinary fail, reveal or plot twist into a moment of comic villainy.

Gargamel is the scheming wizard and chief antagonist of The Smurfs, the long-running Belgian comic and cartoon franchise about the small blue forest dwellers he constantly tries to capture. His cackling laugh became a shorthand online for cartoon villainy, much like Nelson's HA-HA from The Simpsons, because it instantly signals gloating, scheming or a plan backfiring. Clips of the laugh are shared as reaction sounds and dropped into memes, edits and short videos whenever a creator wants a familiar, over-the-top villain moment without needing any dialogue.

What is the Gargamel sound?

It is Gargamel's evil, wheezing laugh from The Smurfs, the sound of the scheming wizard gloating over a plan involving the Smurfs. Creators use it as a short reaction clip for villain reveals and comic schemes.

Where does Gargamel come from?

Gargamel is the main villain of The Smurfs, originally a Belgian comic series that became a popular cartoon about small blue characters living in a forest village. He is constantly trying to capture them.

How do creators use this sound?

Creators place the laugh after a reveal or failed plan to signal scheming, gloating or comic villainy. It works best once, over a zoom or reaction shot, rather than looped throughout a video.
